Northern Neck Food Bank
In partnership with the Northern Neck Food Bank, employees, family and friends from Omega Protein’s Reedville Plant and Health and Science Center took to the fields to help bring fresh produce to families through the Northern Neck Food Bank. In August 2014, Omega Protein Reedville employees, family members and friends picked a cornfield clean at Parker Farms in Westmoreland County near Reedville. The nearly 6,000lbs of corn was picked and donated to food banks in and around the Northern Neck. The gleaning effort was designed to put fresh produce on the tables of local families who otherwise may not have access.
During the gleaning effort, employees learned that nearly 40% of farmed food ends up either unharvested or in landfills. Not only did employees have the privilege of giving back to their community in one of the most basic, natural ways possible. It was a great team building exercise for those who participated. Employees laughed, tromped through mud and depended on each other in order to get the job done in just a few hours.
Representatives from Omega Protein’s Reedville operations teamed up with The Northern Neck Food Bank in October to help bring fresh produce to families. The group harvested a total of 16,455 servings of fresh collard greens and kale for those in the Northern Neck and Eastern Virginia. It is such a privilege for us to be able to give back to our community in such an earthy way.
